Geography and History

Lorestan province. Covering an area of 28,559 sq . km. Located in the west of Iran. The highest point with the altitude of 4050 m. is Oshtorankooh summit and lowest point is situated in the far southern of the province which is 500 m. high form sea level. The townships of the province include Khoram Abad, Boroujerd, Aligoodarz, Doroud, Koohdasht, Azna, Delfan, selseleh and poldokhtar. Khoram Abad is the capital city of this province.

The population of Lorestan province was 1,584,434 in 1996 of which 53.65% were resided in urban area and 45.26% in rural areas and remaining were non-residential . The sex ratio of the Province is 104.

Lorestan Province is a mountainous land which encompasses some alluvial valleys and small plains. The main heights of Zagross mountain range in the province. extends regularly from northwest to the south.

Lorestan province enjoys from 3 different climate. Cold and mountainous zone having cold weather in winter and mild weather in summer including Boroojerd, Dorood Azan, Aligoodarz . Nourabad, and Aleshtar. The climate of central temperate Zone of which spring begins in early March and continues till early June. Khoram Abad and its surroundings are situated in this zone. Warm southern zone which under the influence of Khoozestan hot winds, having hot summers and relatively mild winters. Poldokhtar and Popy region are located in this zone.

Lorestan Province is amongst ancient Iranian regions having antique monuments. In 3000 and 4000 BC., migrant clans resided in the Zagross mountains and Beynolnahrein (present Doroud) land was conquered by them. According to Babylonian , Assyrian and Elamite inscriptions, Zagross mountain residents had been tribes like Lolobi, Manai, kasi, Gouti, Amada and parswa.

Decline of Kasians in 2000 BC., Happened by assault of Elamite Powerful government.Consequently, kasians retreated to Zagross and became the tributary of Elimates. Alexander occupied these areas in his attack to Iran.

In Sassanian era, Poshtkooh and Pishkooh were administered by a man from the famous family of Hormozan. In the year 637 AD., the northern area was conquered Nahavand and southern par of Lorestan in 642 AD.

In the year 643 AD., Lorestan was annexed to Koofeh government and since then it was a part of Aragh-e-Adjam (Jebal state). In this century Hosnavieh (a Kordish man) conquered this region and his family dominated over Lorestan till 12 century AD. Simultaneous with the dominance of Mongols over Iran, Lorestan was divided into two parts, greater Lor and smaller Lor.

Lorestan province is one of the sightly and interesting to see regions of Iran. Existence of snow-clad heights, valleys, rivers, beautiful lakes, springs, wetlands, water falls, plains and… are amongst invaluable tourism attractions in this region.

Khoram Ababd

Khoram Abad is 494 km. Far from Tehran . This city is located in mountainous area and Simreh river passes through its west side. The climate of Khoram Abad is mild in mountainous areas and warm in southern parts adjacent to Khoozastan plain. Having a long historical antiquity, it has passed several civilizations like Kasi, Babeli, Elimate, Sassani, Salghoughi Kharazmshahi and…. Since its emergence .

The important natural, historical and religious sites of this township are:

            Quiou lake, Taff (Nozhyan) and Afrineh water falls,

            Piramoon attractive valleys,

            Gerdab Sangi and Golestan springs, Blind first habitat,

             So many caves,

             Several casles including Falak-ol-Aflak castle,

             Historical bridges,

             Inscriptions,

             Historical hills,

            Old grave yards,

            Old bazar of Mirza Seyed Reza,

            Old water mills of Baba Abbas and Diver Sangi

            Old minaret,

             Jame’ mosque,

             Jamal Akbar dome,

             Seyed arch,

           Tombs of Iranian famous Gnostics,

            Natural History museum.

Boroujerd

Boroujerd is 394 km. Far from Tehran. It is located in a fertile plain which is bounded to Zagross mountain range from the north and lower part of “dez” river is situated in west of it.

Climate of this city is mild in summer and cold in winter.

Boroujerd if one of the old cities of Iran. Some know it as memorial of “Firooz Sassani” and other know it the place for re-gathering of defeated Yazdegerd III army.

In Ghajar time, Hessam-o-saltaneh, the governor of Khoozestan and Lorestan. Put it as capital city of his government and excavated a ditch around it. Enjoying temperate mountainous weather, fertile plains, permanent water streams,luxuriant rangelands, development of communication and commercial networks and … Boroujerd has absorbed so many population resulting in its development. Important natural, historical and religious sites of this city city are:

·                    Boroujerd beautiful wetland, wildlife habitats and attractive oshtorankooh mountains,

·                    Antique hills,

·                    Water reservoirs,

·                    Jameh’ msoques,

·                    Several Imamzadeh.

Aligoudarz

Aligoodarz town ship is 503 km. Far from Tehran and situated in a region being a mixture of plain and foothill enjoying of a Mountainous mild climate. Oshtorankooh mountain range and Aligoodarz river are situated in this township.

Befor emeragence of Aligoudarz, there has been a city with the same name in present location which has been disappeared due to unknown reasons. In the past, the Monastery of this city was a religious training center for Ghezelbash and dervishes. In the mountains and hills around Aligoudarz antique objects like cubic rectangular bricks earthenware belonging to 13 century AD. Have discovered. Important natural and historical sites of Aligoudarz are as follows:

·                    Absefid eater fall and Aligoudarz forests,

·                    Sayleh castle, Tamandar and Bexnavid caves, and masisilan ancient Hill.

Koohdasht

]Koohdash township is located in the west of Lorestan province.

Archeological studies carried out in locations like Sorkhda, Lori, Hamian and Sartarhan show that koohdasht has been one of the focal points of Iranian civilization in the past.

Discovery of Assyrian Temple shows that this region has been dwelled by some people during the years 1000 BC. And they performed their religious duty. Iranian historian “Mostofi” his book has mentioned about kohdash and Tarrahan which had been disappeared several centuries before entrance of Arabs.

Important natural, historical and religious sites of Koohdash are as follows:

·                    Beautifull valleys of Vizenhar and Sartarhan.

·                    Hamian 1 and 2, Vizenhar, Doosheh, Botkhaneh and Mirmolas caves,

·                    Koohzad, Zolalangiz, Chagh, and Changari caves,

·                    Kashkaroud, Karvdokhtar, Sassani, Gavmishan and Chamnamasht bridges,

·                    Choghasabz, Kaftarloo, and Darekeh hills,

·                    Aligizhou, Shah Mohammad and Abolvafa domes,

·                    Mausoleums of Sahledin and old plane trees.

Doroud

This city, which was formerly called “Beynolnahreyin” is stands at the confluence of two rivers Tireh and marbereh enjoying cold mountainous climate with cold winters and temperate summers.

The primary nucleus of the city were some villages with agricultural economy. But, in last decades, the rural feature of the city repidly changed to a relatively industrial city. The main natural and historical sites of this city are as follows:

·                    Gahar lake, Bisheh and Talehrang water falls,

·                    Mano cave.

Delphan

Mountainou Delphan an township stands in the north of Lorestan Province enjoying cold climate. Admiralty metal objects  obtained from historical hills of this city show that Delphan has been residence of warlike Kasi tribes engaging in animal breeding and have had more importance in Sassanian and Achaemenian era. Ancient hills of Delphan are amongst the most important tourism attractions of this city.

Azna

Azna is situated on slopes of Oshtorankooh mountain enjoying cold winters and mild summers. It is told that Armenians migrated here about 600 years back and founded Azna Village Then. Other tribes including Moslems substituted them and engaged in acricultural activities.

This city is situated in the route of Isfahan-Khoozestan road and is connected to national railroad network. Tambourli cave is the most important historical site and Imamzadeh ghasem is important religious monument of this city.

Poldokhtar

Poldokhtar is located in southern warm climatic region of the province, which under the influence of Khoozestan hot winds, has very hot summers. The important natural, historical and cultural sites of this city are as follows:

·                    Beautiful wetland of Poldokhtar,

·                    Kalmakareh, Koorgan and Koolkoni caves

·                    Ancient castles of Mazhyn and Koorkan,

·                    Antique hills

·                    Ancient bridges,

·                    Cheshmak grave yard,

·                    Mausoleums,

·                    Taleb Ali dome

Selseleh

Aleshtar is the capital city of Selseleh township. The history of this township is mixed with Khoramabad’ s and is among fertile and luxuriant region of northern Lorestan enjoying pleasant climate. It has several reivers and succulent springs. The most important historical sites of Selseleh are as follows:

      Takhteh Shah Valley, Semsa cave, Kakareza bridge, Sultan-e-Mashregh tomb and Kay hill.

Protected Areas

Natural conditions of Lorestan province has caused appearance of habitats of diverse species of wildlife and flora. Protected Areas of Lorestan province are as follows:

Oshtorankooh, Khoram Abad Sefidkooh, Sefidkooh and Dareh Negar in Dorood.

These areas are the habitats of brown bear, wolf, hyena, boar, fox, jockal, wild sheep, wild goat, gazelle, leopard, mongoose and different reptiles. The most important endemic and migrant birds of the province are: partridge, dull-yellow partridge, pigeon, heron, goose, crane, duck, eagle and  starling. Migratory bird come to the habitats of the province for wintering, nesting and reproduction.

Water resources of the province are habitats of different fishes like yellow fish, trout, rainbow and blind fish. Blind fish is one of the most rare species of fish in the world.

Tourism Facilities

The major cities of Lorestan province are furnishing with asphalt connection roads,  telecommunication facilities and health centers and are easily accessible. There are different hotels, guest houses and other accommodation facilities in the main cities of the province and people and well acquainted with tourism industry.

The souvenirs of the province are handicrafts like carpet, coarse carpet, coarse blanket, nickel silver vessels, engravings and ….
