With an area of 16,532 square kilometers,
the province of Chahar Mahal and Bakhteyari is located in the center of
the mountain chains of Zagros and Iran. It is surrounded by two mountain
chains of the interior Zagros mountains and the province of Esfahan. It is
formed of two main regions, Chahar Mahal and Bakhteyari. It is consisted
of five districts, each is named by the name of its main town, which is
its administrative center. They are: Shahr-e-Kurd, Boroojen, Lurdekan,
Farsan and Ardal. Shahre Kurd is the administrative center of the
province. The population of the province in 1996 was 761,168 from which 45% were registered as urban dwellers, 54.8% villagers and the remaining were recorded as nomad tribes. The province is located in the center of the Zagros mountain chain which crosses the province north-west towards south-east . The highest peak of the highland of the province is named Zard Kooh Bakhteyari with 4,548 meters altitude, and the lowest point of the province is located in the eastern part of Chahar Mahal. The highlands of this province are the head springs of the largest rivers of Iran such as Zayandeh Rood and Karron. The mountainous areas of the province are of the permanent water supplier areas of the country and the peaks of the province are covered with snow for all seasons of the year. The province area consisted mainly of highlands, and most of its area has more than 2,000 meters altitude. This turns the province to a very cold region, especially in winter. Snow fall in this province starts usually from the middle of the autumn, and it continues till the first month of the spring. But there are some lowlands in which temperature rise in summer to more than 40 C degree, and rain fall average is consequently lower. The cold season usually starts from the mid-automn and it lasts 4-5 months, in which January and February are the coldest. The general average of the temperature in this province is +10.3C, while the higher average is +35.2 C, and the lower average is - 15.6 C degree. The annual rain fall averege is 426 millimeters and the frost days average is recorded at 127. While May- November is recorded as dry season, the higher rate of rain and snow fall, as well as frost is in the other season. The history of the province of Chahar Mahal and Bakhteyari is mixed with the the Bakhteyari tribe. There are a branch of the "Lur Bozorg" which means the Grand Lur. The Bakhteyari tribe, itself is divided into two main branches which are called "haft Lang" and "Chahar Lang". The Bakhteyari tribe have two different, summer and winter territories. The summer territory of the Chahar Lang branch is to the north, while the summer territory of the Haft Lang is to the south. Historically, the Bakhteyari territory was some times under the Fars state, and some other times under the Khuzestan’s. The nomad living style of the tribe of Bakhteyaris, did not left many historical buildings or physical elements. But the beautiful nature of the region and the many eco-turism potentials of the province are significant and unique, which attracts viewers. The magnificent and beautiful marshlands, wonderful malls, green river sides, unique flora lands, warm and mineral water spring, pleasant water falls, marvelous highlands, snow view and tens of other natural elements which increases the beauties of the environments of the province, and provides facilities for tourism in summer as well as skiing and other kinds of winter sports. The town of Shahr-e-Kurd is located 543
kilometers South to Tehran, the national capital . It is located in a
plain which is surrounded by many mountain chains. It was a part of the territories of Atabakan Fars and Luristan during the seventh century AH. A check point was built on this side for controlling traveling and providing facilities for passengers, and because the soldiers of this check point were Kurd, it was named "Deh Kurd" which means the village of the Kurdish people. Few decades ago , when this village was expanded, its name was changed to "Shahr-e-Kurd" which means the town of the Kurdish people. The town of Boroojen is located 571
kilometers south to the national capital Tehran. It is located in a plain
which is surrounded by high mountains. The town altitude is 1980 meters,
and it enjoys moderate weather in summer and a very cold one in winter.
The important places to visit in this town and surrounding areas are as
following: hChagha Khor marshland, Gandoman and Soulgan. hHamzeh Ali shrine which is located in Beldaji village. |

| Lurdekan | |
| The town of Lurdekan is located 81 kilometers south to Shahr-e-Kurd, and 624 kilometers south to Tehran. This town is the headquarters of the Haft Lang Bakhteyari tribes. This town may be the same town which has been referred to by many historians and geographers with the name of "Lurjan". Estakhri, the famous geographer, identify it as the center of the Sardan state and speaks of its largeness and expansion of the town though big gardens. The most important places to visit in this town and its suburb is "Abshare Atashgah" , or the "Fire Place Water Fall", which is located 40 kilometers to Lurdekan, near a village called Atashgah. | |

The district of Farsan is located on the
north-west and the western parts of the province, and the town of Farsan
is located 35 kilometers to Shahre Kurd, and 578 kilometers to Tehran. It
was built on a high land with a beautiful view and a very good climate.
The area is usually covered with snow for many months a year. The area is
consequently full of spring water and beautiful countrysides. Thousands of
domestic tourists visit the region during summer. The most important

The province of Chahar Mahal and Bakhteyari
is significant for its geographical characteristics, specially its
beautiful mountains and forests. This has provided the province with
marvelous wild life. The most significant wild animals of the province
are; otter, wild goat, ram, ewe, gazelle, panther, brown bear, wolf, boar,
fox, beaver, partridge, ducks, grouse, bustard, and falcon. Although this province is mainly consisted
of highlands and its geographical difficalties, it is well facilitated
with many transportation and road networks which are suitable for tourism
there. All towns of the province are connected to each other by good and
modern roads, and access to these towns is easy . Most towns are well
facilitated also by different kinds of hotels, restaurants and other
infrastructures which can be used by tourists. The tourism pool of Chegard,
and marshland of Borojen and Imam Hamzeh Ali are well facilitated with
hotels, guest houses and restaurants. The town of Shahr-e-Kurd is close to historical and beautiful city Esfahan (120 kilometers), so the Esfahan international airport can be used by tourists and access to this airport from Shar-e-Kurd is very easy. |
